What we do

Our aims are to:

  • Support the growth and development of entrepreneurs (particularly social entrepreneurs and nurse entrepreneurs)
  • Develop the art and science of nurse entrepreneurship
  • Encourage the development of social enterprises in health and social care
  • Improve the delivery of healthcare

The six areas of work we use to fund and deliver this are as follows:

a) Supporting new and emerging social enterprises in health
b) Helping social enterprises increase their funding from NHS commissioners
c) Helping NHS commissioners work better with social enterprises
d) Developing entrepreneurship within nurses and other clinical staff
e) Helping people use technology to support entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship
f) Helping social enterprises increase their funding from web-based passive income streams

a) Supporting new and emerging social enterprises in health

We help people turn their ideas into viable social enterprises, help them create new organisations, raise their initial funding, develop their management and board structures, sort out financial and hr systems and guide them through all the trials and tribulations of being a start-up social enterprise. We also provide courses and development programmes for entreprenuers and some of threse are provided free of charge.

b) Helping social enterprises increase their funding from NHS commissioners

We help more established organisations discover their untapped potential, develop new marketing and income-generation opportunities and help them meet and build relationships with NHS commissioners. We have yet to find a social enterprise that we couldn't help identify ways of doubling its income and most have baraely scratched their potential in this area.

c) Helping NHS commissioners work better with social enterprises

We help NHS bodies enagage better with social enterprises and have piloted innovative models for NHS commissioning of the third sector. Most NHS commissioners want new solutions to their problems and particularly long-standing difficult areas such as mild-to-moderate mental health, lower back pain, chronic diseases, obesity, etc. We help them find social enterprises who can provide solutions to these problems and have come up with innovative commissioning processes to support these.

d) Developing entrepreneurship within nurses and other clinical staff

There is a huge well of untapped innovation and entrepreneurship within every nursing workforce and most organisations have no idea how to release and harness this potential. We help nurses generate ideas to improve care and coach them in raising funding, getting organisational support and then implementing these changes. We also help organisations learn how to do this better for themselves.

e) Helping people use technology to support entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship

There is a lot of interest in using technology to support entrepreneurs, whether it is through e-learning, websites, blogs, podcasts or electronic communities. As technology gets easier and easier to use and cheaper to implement, the challenge is in finding the right solution, avoiding unneccesary expense and coming up with tools that people will use. We help people identify the right solutions and implement them, often for a fraction of the cost they were expecting.

f) Helping social enterprises increase their funding from web-based passive income streams

Web-based passive income streams? What on earth are we on about. Well there is a global market for information and knowledge and many social enterprises have extremely valuable knowledge and information, whether it is about particular communities, innovative ways of addressing problems or even clever ways of increasing their funding. The internet offers a range of ways of capturing and distributing that knowledge (through blogs, ebooks, podcasts, videos, etc) and you could potentially sell that information and knowledge using the internet. In simple terms, while you are asleep, you can be earning money (hence passive income streams) and this can help provide additional funding for your social enterprise.
